Absurd to stop human progress: Putin slams calls to prioritize ecopolitics over technology

Russian President Vladimir Putin slammed appeals to abandon technological progress for the sake of prioritizing green politics.

"A profound and meaningful discussion" is needed to hash over the problems of combining long-term development and environmental welfare, and a high standard of living, the president told the Global Manufacturing and Industrialization Summit (GMIS) on Tuesday.

"However, instead of a substantive discussion regarding the global, climatic and environmental agenda, we often see, unfortunately, downright populism, speculation, and sometimes, I am not afraid to say this - simply narrow-mindedness," Putin stressed.

"It comes to the point when the world is urged to ditch progress, which will make it possible to freeze the situation at the best, and create prosperity for the select few. In contrast, hundreds of millions of people throughout the globe will have to accept that at the moment they have, or it would be more honest to say, don’t have access to clean water, food, education and other benefits of civilization," he said.

"This archaism is a blind alley, it is a road to new conflicts," the Russian leader pointed out. According to him, "the migration crisis in Europe and in the US stems from this". A blind faith in simple, impressive but inefficient solutions leads to problems," Putin cautioned, mentioning appeals to abandon nuclear and hydrocarbon energy, while betting on current alternative sources of energy.

"Will people feel comfortable living on the planet dotted with wind-driven generators and covered with layers of solar batteries?" he asked, then noting that as the saying goes "instead of tidying up the house we’ll just sweep the garbage under the rug". He also mentioned problems with wind-powered generators that lead to the deaths of birds, and other side effects that this source creates.

"Of course, we can't stop those who want to wear animal skins or move into caves, but it is impossible and absolutely absurd to stop human progress," the Russian president stressed.

Russian Military To Receive Completely New Hypersonic And Laser Energy Weapons

A scientific conference involving the leadership of the Russian Armed Forces started in Moscow on June 18. 

The Russian Armed Forces are about to get a whole new weapon based on laser energy and hypersonic, the first of its samples have already been introduced into trial combat duty, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu said.

“In the near future, the Russian Armed Forces will receive a completely new, unparalleled weapon based on hypersonic and laser energy technologies. Its first samples have already been put on trial combat duty,” he said.

The defense minister noted that development of technologies and new weapons have significantly change the face of contemporary warfare and armed conflicts.

The defense ministry’s website reports:

“Armed conflicts we saw the last decades show that the nature of warfare has changed considerably. It is caused by the rapid development of science and technologies, the emergence of new weapons – all these influence forms and methods of warfare”, Sergei Shoigu explained.
At the same time, he noted that “as the high-tech weapons and military equipment enter the service, the forms and methods of warfare should be improved.”
“And we are making progress in this issue”, the Defence Minister stressed.
He also pointed out that at today’s conference they will discuss “the features of modern operations, issues of command and control and comprehensive support of the actions, the use of new and advanced types of weapons.”
According to Sergei Shoigu, “the results of the conference will contribute to the further development of the military strategy and operational art of Russia.”

Space war between US & Russia will trap humanity on Earth, no matter who wins – analysts

Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan may claim the US will win any war in space, not realizing that such conflict will forever make humanity prisoners on Earth. Thankfully, his words are just propaganda, analysts say.

“I’m fully confident we could win a conflict in space today” against Russia, China or any other adversary, Shanahan told US senators, who are deciding if he’s fit to take on the job on a permanent basis.
When asked to comment on this ambitious statement, Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, remembered the words of US astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who was the sixth person to walk on the moon.

“Years ago, I organized a protest at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and one of the speakers was Mitchell. And he said if there’s one war in space – it’ll be the last because so much space junk will be created by blowing up the satellites that we won’t be able to get a rocket off Earth anymore. It just won’t be able to get through this ‘minefield.'” However, the acting defense secretary’s words “are really not new” as Washington had been talking about controlling and dominating space since the days of President Ronald Reagan back in the 1980s, Gagnon told RT.

 “The question is – with what hardware exactly is the US going to achieve this victory?” he wondered. The analyst recalled that US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) marked three perspective directions in developing military space technologies back in 2002. “They were space interceptors, which would eliminate ballistic missiles; space platforms with powerful lasers, most likely nuclear powered, to protect the US territory; and special systems to strike targets on Earth with space-to-surface missiles.”

According to Leonkov, “none of these American projects is even close to practical implementation” at the moment. Unlike the US, “Russia has recently developed a real military laser system and possesses technologies to deliver it to orbit,” he said. And if Soviet experience in the field is restored, “it’ll all be fine” for Russia.

“The USSR produced several space military systems and even tested them. One of them was the R-36ORB missile, which was able to remain in orbit as a satellite and hit a target on the ground on command from the control center. This system was even on combat duty until 1993.

We also had Almaz space battle stations that could tackle spacecraft and ballistic missiles.” China is also a strong competitor, as it already has “anti-satellite and anti-missile systems in orbit,” while actively developing its manned space program, Leonkov said.

Russia seeks to ‘feed the whole planet’ – PM

Russia seeks to expand its agricultural exports, ultimately seeking to feed the whole planet, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said. The PM’s statement comes as the country enjoys a record surge in grain exports.

“Our country is, as they say, destined by the heavens to feed the whole planet. And we’ll try and do that,” Medvedev told journalists of Russian TV channels in a major interview aired on Thursday.

Russia’s grain exports surge more than 54% this year

Apart from being the country’s “destiny,” the foods plainly make “nice export goods,” the prime minister added. Russia’s agriculture has expanded greatly over the past few years, becoming a solid and profitable industry, unlike the way it was a couple decades ago.

“Back in 1990s, the agriculture was called a ‘black hole’, where one should not invest, we were told we should not feed ourselves since we can purchase everything elsewhere,” Medvedev said. “Now, it feeds our whole country. We’ve reached the main goals regarding food security and we’re exporting grains, other goods to the world market.”

This year, Russia has enjoyed vast growth of its agricultural exports, becoming the world’s top exporter of wheat. From January through September of 2018, exports of Russia’s wheat and meslin flour expanded by 54.3 percent compared to the previous year.

The amount of food which the county imports, in its turn, continued to shrink. Imports of grains to Russia dropped by 11.1 percent during the same period. Imports of barley have suffered an enormous decline, dropping a whopping 94 percent.
